Audit Committee consideration of the Solar Farm Project

The Riverland has seen an influx of champion hockey players and enthusiasts this week, held at Glassey Park in Berri. The national event has attracted over 1000 visitors to the region, giving local businesses a boost over the typically quieter winter months. All three Riverland councils partnered to fund the Championships event.

The Berri Barmera Council has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer following a comprehensive recruitment process. Mayor Peter Hunt has confirmed the appointment of André Stuyt to the Council’s senior role. Mr Stuyt will take up his position from early-July.

A new State Dogs and Cats Online system has been developed and will be introduced as of 1 July 2018. This online system will be the portal for all registration payments, micro chipping and breeder information.

Lake Bonney foreshore will host the Ulysses Club this Saturday morning from 7.00am before they head on their grand parade to Renmark around 9.00am.

Last week beginning April 9 saw fences and signage going up, machinery coming to site and the initial works commence in earnest. This week we see heavy machinery excavating the southern side of Riverview Drive and the project moving ahead under more favourable weather conditions than last week’s short but intense heatwave.

Congratulations to Berri receiving a “Highly Commended” award in the Medium Sized Town category at the KESAB Sustainable Communities program awards held in Adelaide yesterday.

If you hear some banging around the Berri township during this week, it is more than likely coming from the sheet pile testing being undertaken down the riverfront as part of new wharf development project. The project is in its early stages and these works are required to assist the detailed design.

Soft plastics that can be scrunched into a ball should not go in recycle bins! Why? Unfortunately this type of recyclable material gets caught in the recycling machinery. What do we do with our soft plastics then?

Today the new Riverland office for the Red Cross was officially opened in Berri. It is great to see that Red Cross have moved into our region (30 Kay Avenue, Berri) and that they will be providing a range of services including the Community Transport Services that were formally provided by Council..

Council is seeking feedback for potential sites in Barmera for an Off Leash Dog Park. Two sites have been identified through internal consultation with the Barmera Town Beautification Committee and have been recommended for consideration. • Bruce Oval (parallel with Scott Ave) and • Johnny Baynes Park, Amy Street, Barmera. These have been identified as locations that provide accessibility, car parking, amenities and a suitable dimension for the park. The feedback forms must be returned prior to Friday 13 October 2017

The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Hon Stephen Mullighan MP recently announced that the Berri Barmera Council’s proposed Berri Riverfront Wharf has been successful in securing nearly $600,000 in funding for the $1.199M project.

There will be an increase to fines and expiations for dog and cat owners from 1 July under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

Barmera has triumphed at the Keep Australia Beautiful National Tidy Towns Awards, claiming the honour of the 2017 Overall Winner.

The exterior painting of the Bonney Theatre, Barmera Soldiers Memorial Hall and façade of the Barmera Library will be commencing 2 March and will take approx. 4 weeks to complete. During this time, fencing and bunting will be used to ensure the safety of residents and contractors. Please be aware that access to the library will be through the rear entrance for 2 and 3 March. Council has recently lodged an application for funding from the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) for a redevelopment of area around the Vietnam War Memorial and Visitor Information Centre at Berri. Successful projects will have funding announced in the middle of this year. Should the project proceed it will see Riverview Drive intersection with Vaughan Terrace narrowed and the public areas on either side of the road widened for both everyday use and events. In particular the Vietnam War Memorial is located very close to the kerbs of Vaughan Terrace and Riverview Drive. In consultation with Riverland Vietnam Veterans a design has been developed creating significantly more space around the Memorial for events, quiet contemplation and paying respect.

Council announces the sale of Lots 5-19 of the Berri Riverfront blocks

Council has undertaken a review of the elector representation process to ensure that the electors, are being adequately and fairly represented and is inviting electors input on a subsequent report which details the review process and public consultation undertaken so far.

Please note that teams are working throughout our district to remove fallen trees from roads, however we need to advise that most will be just cut and moved to the side of the road until we can return to pick up over the next three days. We are keen to hear from you, on 8582 1922, if there are any other trees fallen that are blocking public access. Note that when you come across a fallen tree that has already been cut, then this has already been registered with Council for future pick up.. Please take care when travelling around by car (or foot) over the next few days, and resist parking under trees where ever possible.

Dementia is a National Health Priority with a significant increase in the number of people living with the disease projected over the next two decades and no immediate expectation of a breakthrough in science providing a cure. Council has recognised that in collaboration with both State and Federal Governments, Local Government has a meaningful role in addressing the needs of people living in the community with Dementia and their families and carers. The action plan outlines a number of activities that Council can assist with in supporting those impacted by the affects of Dementia.

Council is undertaking a review to determine whether a change of arrangements are required in respect to elector representation so as to ensure that the electors of the area being adequately and fairly represented.

With the recent extreme weather and warm weather to come, the region is beginning to experience localised mosquito breeding and associated nuisance biting problems. Council has a mosquito control program in place, however it is important you do what you can to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.

Did you know that it is illegal to park or stop on footpaths, dividing paths and nature strips? During the month of July, Council will be undertaking a targeted campaign addressing the issue of illegal parking within our region.

On 7 July 2016 State Parliament passed new laws relating to ownership of cats and dogs. It is important to know that the changes do not come into force immediately. Council is awaiting the Government to release draft Regulations which will be subject to Public Consultation later in 2016. In the meantime please refer to the link below for more information:

The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) together with the Berri Barmera Council are pleased to officially declare Berri as an RV Friendly Town™.

Yesterday, thousands of Murray Cod fingerlings were released into the River Murray at Kingston on Murray, in a bid to boost the fish species. One of the largest native freshwater fish in Australia, the Murray Cod's population has been seriously depleted due to environmental degradation and past over-fishing of the waterway. This stock enhancement trial is an important step in ensuring that there is a healthy population and sustainable recreational fishery. The Murray Cod Stock Enhancement Project is led by PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture, with a working group of representatives from SARDI Aquatic Sciences, the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources, RecFish SA and industry experts.

National Stronger Regions Fund delivers $3.5 million for the Riverland Regional Innovation and Sports Precinct, a capital works project which will provide facilities aimed at providing a future for the Riverland.

With the works on the new bowling greens at Glassey Park nearing completion, there will be some temporary road closures in the next three weeks to complete the carpark, paths and inner access roads.
