Centenary 2021
Barmera, Monash and Glossop are all celebrating their centenaries this year.
Centenary committees have been established in each town and were determined to continue with their planning, despite last year’s COVID-19 restrictions.
These volunteers have been planning events, applying for grants and collecting old photos, memorabilia, and oral histories to preserve and share the memories of the past 100 years.
Berri Barmera Council has so far allocated $56,000 through a Centenary Grants Scheme towards events and projects with Round 1 of the Grants Scheme closed in October 2020. Further funding rounds were open in March and September 2021.
In Barmera, the first historical displays to mark the town’s 100th birthday are already starting to be put together in the windows of shops in the main street. The Barmera Centenary Committee received funding from Country Arts SA in October last year, to enable a group of volunteers to make 20 paper mache life sized models of people, portraying the town’s history. These characters will feature in the historical window scenes. Barmera is also planning a series of events including a Centenary Street Party on Easter Sunday, April 4. A Barmera Centenary Bowls Spectacular is being held in May and will feature The Australian Jackaroos Bowls Team.
In Monash, the Lone Gum and Monash Community Association started planning their centenary events and projects in 2018. An exhibition titled “Monash Hidden Secrets Exposed” will run from May 28 until May 30. It will highlight the history and lives of the early soldier settlers, honouring their hard work and community spirit. A Monash Military Ceremony and Flyover to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of Monash on August 28,1921 is also being planned for August 29, 2021. The Monash community is also expected to celebrate its 100th birthday with a shindig, featuring a communal feast of food, wine and music on October 2.
Glossop’s celebrations are mostly planned for October. The Centenary of the town coincides with Glossop High School’s 80th Anniversary and its final year at the site.
Communities in Cobdogla, Loveday and Overland Corner are also being invited to participate in the Centenary celebrations.
You can keep up to date with the celebrations in Barmera, Monash and Glossop, by following their Facebook and Web pages.
