German WWII Internees from Persia and their Fate in Australia

The experiences of German World War II Internees from Persia at Loveday and Tatura will be told during a one-day symposium event titled German WWII Internees and their Fate in Australia on Saturday March 4 in the Bonney Theatre in Barmera.
The Convenor of the Symposium and Curator of the Exhibition is Professor Pedram Khosronejad from the School of Social Science, Western Sydney University.
An exhibition featuring letters, diaries, photographs and artefacts from German WWII Internees from Persia and from the Riverland’s Loveday Internment Camp (LIC) and Tatura Internment Camp will also be on display on Saturday March 4 and Sunday March 5 in the Barmera Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.
Berri Barmera Council and The Loveday Internment Camp Committee (LICC) are hosting the event to be officially opened by Berri Barmera Mayor Ella Winnall.
The keynote speaker will be Flinders University professor Peter Monteath who will examine the historical perspectives of the internment of Germans in Australia.
Descendants of German civilian prisoners who were taken into custody in Persia and shipped to Australia and incarcerated at the Loveday and Tatura Internment Camps during World War II will also address the forum.
The National Museum of Australia’s senior curator Libby Stewart based in Canberra will also make a presentation.
Loveday Internment Camp Committee curator Rosemary Gower who has spent the past four decades researching the history of the Loveday Internment Camp (LIC) near Barmera in SA’s Riverland will also speak. Ms Gower is devoted to educating local schools, the Riverland community, and domestic and international tourists about the (LIC) and has volunteered her time to this cause.
The symposium on Saturday March 4 begins at 9am and the exhibition will also be open to the public on Sunday March 5 from .
The symposium is free and morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided.
People attending the symposium on Saturday are welcome to join the speakers for dinner at their own cost at the Barmera Club from 6pm.
