TELSTRA OUTAGE CRIPPLING RIVERLAND COMMUNITIES

Berri Barmera Council, Renmark Paringa Council and the District Council of Loxton Waikerie are all customers of the Telstra CSX cloud services product.

Telstra CSX experienced an outage last weekend, which is still ongoing and has meant that the three Riverland Councils have been without access to data and various phone, email and electronic systems for six days.

It is believed that the Telstra CSX outage is also affecting a range of other businesses and organisations that are operating out of one particular data centre.

From a local government perspective, almost all core functions have been affected by Telstra’s CSX outage.  This includes critical legislative compliance, safety and essential service functions.

Some critical functions affected include:

  • Performing property searches, which are required for conveyancing, to enable property settlements to occur.
  • Assessing development applications, which legally must be considered within a legislated timeframe.
  • Accessing building fire safety files to enable critical compliance work to occur.
  • Processing Dial Before You Dig requests to enable safe construction work in our community.
  • Processing cemetery requests to enable burials and the interment of remains.
  • Making payments to our valued and hardworking contractors.

These time critical functions are in addition to the vast array of regular day-to-day functions of the three Riverland Councils that are affected.

Tim Pfeiffer, the Chief Executive Officer of Berri Barmera Council said, “It is astonishing in this day and age for an outage to last so long.”

“The effects of this prolonged Telstra CSX outage are having profound effects on our Riverland community.”

“We are currently at day six of this Telstra CSX outage, despite having a service level agreement that allows outages of no more than two hours.”

“The three Riverland Councils do not currently know when or even if Telstra will be able to restore our cloud services.”
