Environment, Health and Food Safety
Council's Commitment to a Sustainable Environment
Council is committed to fostering a healthy, sustainable and climate-resilient environment, as outlined in our Strategic Plan 2025-35. Council aims to:
- Strengthen climate resilience and biodiversity.
- Secure long-term water sustainability through innovative management and advocacy for the health of our rivers and lakes.
- Embed sustainability across our operations by reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and promoting waste reduction and resource recovery.
Together, we can care for our environment and live harmoniously with the native wildlife that share our region.
Environmental and Public Health
The Berri Barmera Council has a number of responsibilities relating to public and environmental health which are primarily dealt with by our Environmental Health Officer (EHO).
These include:
- Food Safety
- Food Business Notification
- Wastewater System
- Septic Tank Desludging
- Mosquito Control
- European Wasps
Enquires regarding these public health areas can be directed to our Environmental Health Officer at ‘Contact us’.
Living with Wildlife
Native wildlife are an important part of our natural environment. While many live in national parks and outlying areas, they can also be found in our streets, gardens and backyards.
The Department for Environment and Water encourages a “Living with Wildlife” approach, promoting positive attitudes and coexistence between people and wildlife. This approach:
- Promotes understanding and respect for native animals
- Encourages conservation and humane management of wildlife
- Supports non-lethal and welfare-focused solutions when issues arise
