New initiative to get Riverlanders moving

The Riverland community has a new health initiative, aimed at creating a supportive and inclusive environment for locals and visitors to engage in physical activity.

MOVE Riverland is a Connected and Active Communities - Riverland project and aims to have participants take part in the 5km trail at Lake Bonney, Barmera.

Participants can walk, run or roll along the 5km trail and are encouraged to log their activity via the MOVE Riverland group on Strava to connect with others and stay accountable to their own fitness and health goals.

Connected and Active Communities Project Officer Nick Dillon said while the official launch is still a few weeks away, Riverlanders were already signing up to the Strava group and logging their exercise.

“By leveraging the existing 5km trail at Lake Bonney and collaborating with local clubs, MOVE Riverland aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all community members to engage in physical activity, fostering health and connection,” he said.

“This initiative is not about being the fastest runner in the group. Instead, it’s about being inspired and encouraged by other people being active in our community.

“Locals are already logging their exercise via the MOVE Riverland group on Strava, which is great to see.”

An official launch will take place on Sunday 22 June at Lake Bonney, with participants encouraged to enjoy the 5km loop along the lakefront.

“The official launch event will be a great way to bring the community together for a run, walk or roll, with a number of organisations providing health information on the day,” Mr Dillon said.

“The great thing about MOVE Riverland is that members can do as little or as much of the trail as they like, at their own pace.”

While the Barmera 5km trail is the pilot course for MOVE Riverland, locals are encouraged to use the Strava group to log their exercise when and where they can.

Connected and Active Communities - Riverland aims to partner with community to build and deliver impactful physical activity initiatives.

Connected and Active Communities - Riverland is made possible thanks to the Loxton Waikerie, Berri Barmera and Renmark Paringa councils, and the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.
