Old Lyrup Road to be utilised as works progress
Lyrup Road users will soon travel via a different route to allow for completion of the extensive road repair project.
Lyrup Road will be fully closed from Monday 2 November to Friday 18 December 2026 with the nearby Old Lyrup Road to be used as an alternative route.
Berri Barmera Council CEO Tim Pfeiffer said he was pleased the project was almost complete.
“We thank Lyrup Road users for their continued patience as these important works are progressed,” he said.
Lyrup Road was considerably damaged by the 2022/23 River Murray flood, with longitudinal cracks identified about nine months after the flood waters subsided.
Works began in July 2026 after external funding was secured, appropriate approvals were received and an extensive tender process undertaken.
While Lyrup Road is closed, road users will be able to use Old Lyrup Road and the Lyrup Ferry will remain operational.
Speed restrictions and traffic management will be in place on Old Lyrup Road and the Sturt Highway to help drivers safely enter and exit the highway.
“We recognise repairing Lyrup Road has been a lengthy process, but the outcome means Berri Barmera Council ratepayers will not be left with a multi-million-dollar bill for the project,” Mr Pfeiffer said.
“We thank our neighbouring councils for their ongoing advocacy and acknowledge State Government departments involved for their funding support and identifying opportunities to improve the long-term resilience of this important Riverland road.”
The long-term resilience includes the addition of a culvert, which will be installed during the upcoming road closure.
