Sandbag removal at cultural heritage sites

Several Lake Bonney cultural heritage sites will undergo restorative works in coming months.

During the 2022/23 River Murray flood, hundreds of sandbags were imported to protect Aboriginal cultural heritage sites around the Lake Bonney foreshore under declared emergency management provisions.
Unfortunately, the supplied sandbags and their contents were made with unsuitable materials and are now required to be carefully removed to protect the underlying cultural heritage sites.
The works, which began last week, are being undertaken by a local contractor on behalf of Council, the State Government and Green Industries SA (GISA).
GISA are fully funding the works, which are expected to be completed in early 2025.
In the past 12 months, Council strongly advocated for necessary funding to undertake the removal works.
Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation (AAR) and River Murray Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (RMMAC) cultural monitors will be on site while the works are under way.
