Young Citizen of the Year - Deni Eleftheriadis

Whilst juggling year twelve, sporting and work, Deni took on board a large role in the Our Town Berri initiative, working to gain mental health funding for Berri. Deni's role included talking to stakeholders, analysing data, gaining insights, and conducting interviews with a range of diverse people as well as managing the Facebook page and keeping fellow staff and students up to date with the progression of the initiative. Through her work with Our Town, Deni began to volunteer her time at Berri Primary, mentoring students and helping them better understand mental health as well as teaching one student how to play piano.

Deni was also invited to an online retreat to present to six towns and the leaders about Berri and its challenges and strengths. Alongside her involvement in the initiative, Deni participated in extra curriculars at her school, representing Glossop at athletics, debate, and knockout sports.

Deni plays an avid role in community sports, being a coach and umpire for both Berri and the Riverland, as well as playing at a senior level for both sports.

Deni has attended the Berri Hospital to talk to allied health professionals about body image, sleep, and gratitude as well as attending the year ten women's studies class to discuss body image and women empowerment.

Deni received an Order of Australia—Highly Commended Award this year, alongside the Premier Sport's senior women award and the ZONTA Women in International Affairs Award and scholarship.
